Artwork by Cathy Roberts

My paintings are influenced by the primary school students I teach- colorful, playful with child like qualities. I have a unique abstract realism style. Some of my paintings look realistic but on closer inspection a tree is a beer bottle, a mirage, a pub. I see shapes within other shapes inspired by cloud like picture formations I was obsessed with as a child. These shapes often intersect, overlap and transform into other objects. A favourite symbol in many of my paintings feature a fish that is created with the Sydney Harbour Bridge and The Opera House. My inspiration comes from growing up in Zimbabwe and loving the African bush, living in Sydney, Australia and my love of the ocean and surfing.
